Sketchings and UI Skin Project update

This is my most current build of the HUD/GUI (click the image for a bigger size) Yay!

1. HUD Bar. Displays my CPU and RAM performance, along with my network speed (upload and download).
2. Hard Disk Drive Read Outs. Shows how much memory is free, clicking these would take me to their respective drives.
3. Google Search Bar. This one is a modified version of Poiru’s Gnometer module. Had to make it match my set :)
4. Object Dock. Works like the dock in MacOS
but with some other features.
5. Task Manager button. It’s intentionally faint, a triangle with 1px light gray border to keep it look clean.
6. (Up top) Uptime. Keeps track of how long my computer has been on.
7. Incinerator. An homage to Portal, it’s really just Recycle Bin.
It displays how many files are in there and how much memory
it’s taken up.
8. Hidden System Tray icons. Hovering my mouse in that general area pops up the tray icons for programs running in the background.
9. Temperature and Weather Condition
10. Time, Day and Date
11. Folder. Not sure if I’m going to make these much because of (12)
12. Launchy, with my custom skin. A smart bar, where I can type the name of a program, file or folder I want to open. Fast, saving me time from clicking folder-to-folder and keep my desktop from icon clutter.
13. Google Calendar Button. Stay Organize and on Task!
Lastly, background is a screenshot I took while playing DeadSpace2 :) Shoot their limbs!!!!

How it is now, I have everything I need at the moment. I can add stuff as I go when I see that I need something or think it would be really cool to have as part of the HUD. Future features I want to add are:
- Animations! These objects deserve to be moving, making my desktop alive. I haven’t figured out how to do this on RainMeter yet, but I will take the time soon.
- Faded/foggy/blurred UI elements, just to add depth
because it’s flat right now =/
- Some ellipses in perspective to add depth as well.
- Background personally made and fitted right for the UI
- Dual Screen support!
- Matching sounds. I really like the one’s from the Armored Core series. Must find a way to get or make them.
- Slideshow window. This would be ideal for when I’m doing quick studies and just something to have in the back flipping through my collection of inspirations, art, photography, 3D.
That’s it for now, sorry if this was boring or so geeky, but I trully enjoyed working on this :D. I’ll post more updates when I hit some major changes.

Here’s a few of the sketches I did when I moved and had no internet. Having no internet (other than from work) for three months gave me time to sort through some of the necessities. Must keep drawing, painting and creating art no matter what, no excuses. No noodling, no lollygagging! :D

The next couple of images are sneak peeks of a side project for myself, kinda re-skinning my desktop interface inspired by couple of UIs/HUDs you've seen in movies and a video I saw on YouTube.

Tutorial: Import All Images into a Single PSD, an easy way

I thought I should start sharing some of my work flow processes that I hope some of you will find useful. One of my philosophies has always been, “Spend less time with drop downs and menus, more time on the canvas.”

Reference material are important to a lot of us. They can spark ideas and anchor our concepts to relatable working designs. One thing I found annoying was opening each individual image in Photoshop then dragging them all into a canvas one-by-one. This can eat up our time, especially if there are boat loads of references, like for some of us hoarders :P. THEN we would still have to rearrange them. There is an option called ‘Load files into Stack’ that lets us import images and folders, in an automated fashion, therefore setting up your references quick and easy.

(scroll to the bottom for the quick steps without the images)
1. Go to File>Scripts>Load Files into Stack…

2. A window should pop-up looking like the one below. Using the drop down I chose ‘Files,’ so I can select specific images. If I pick ‘Folders’, this will load all importable files in a selected folder.
Tip: Place only images you’re sure to use in a ref folder, then select that folder through the script, saving you the hassle of jumping from folder to folder for images you want to import.
3. Locate the images you want to use. Then click ‘OK’.

4. When you’re done hit ‘OK’. This will immediately start loading each file and consolidating all of them into one Photoshop file.
I usually don’t have ‘attempt to align objects’ checked because I will be moving them around anyways.
Note: Photoshop will automatically adjust the canvas to the tallest and widest pixels you have. So for example, if you load a
1680 x 500 image and the rest are 1000 x 1000,
the dimensions of the canvas will be 1680x1000.
5.Then re-arrange anyway you like.

Here are the steps again:
File > Scripts > Load Files into Stack … > browse for your images or folders > Click ‘OK’
There you have it, all your references into one PSD file with less time importing, more time painting :)

Been attending the summer term at Concept Design Academy. I LOVE it there! As the title says, these are the projects I did for the class under the mentorship of John Wu. A ton of great feedback from him and a lot of industry knowledge. Wish I could apply them all with mastery but it’ll come with practice. Anyways, this is a second pass to one of the assignments. I’ll be revising all the homework pieces (including this one) so I can put them in my portfolio.

That’s not the sound he makes. This old crone, if you don’t know, was Krang from Ninja Turtles. I haven’t kept up with the new series so I’m not sure how he is in them. But if a zombie apocalypse ensues… a bit old, I’ll get some new stuff up soon.

In other news, my demo reel is in it’s final stages. Assembling my site together, stitching my artworks for presentation, and getting ready to embark on the job hunt and freelance gigs. Would’ve liked to include all my art but I only had 1min30sec to work with, heh.

Yay! Troll is finally in color stage. Glad to have some off time from work to enjoy some personal art fun. Can’t wait for this quarter to be over too, I have BIG plans ahead. Jumping between Photoshop and Painter with this.

Something to keep in mind… Because of time constraints in the industry, jumping between painting programs may be inefficient?

Just stumbled upon this fun program, and it’s pretty sweet! Here’s a few thumbs I did in between finals. I couldn’t stay away, haha.

Thumbs to the left can be a scene and the ones on the right can be vehicles that run through them.

Keeping with the airship theme, I decided to do a scene that depicted space/airships in a war. I plan on pushing other elements back to add depth and scale and keep the two prominent figures on the top left.

A group of characters based on a tribal group my buddy and I created, Black Feather Tribe. These are some of my initial iterations. The tribe is based on scavenging as a means of survival and living.
